Sculptra Q & A
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a cosmetic injectable filler that adds volume to strategic areas under your skin. As with other dermal fillers, Sculptra can refine or define your facial contours and can meet a multitude of cosmetic treatment goals. However, Sculptra’s unique formula sets it apart from other fillers.
While other fillers contain smooth gel-like products like hyaluronic acid, Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) as a primary ingredient. PLLA stimulates collagen production within your skin to build up volume instead of placing artificial volume at the time of your treatment. You lose collagen with age, but Sculptra helps build some of it back.
Because Sculptra causes natural collagen production within your skin, the results stick around longer than the product itself. PLLA is biocompatible, meaning it safely dissolves within your skin. The results last for around two years with 3-4 treatments spaced a month apart at Dermatology Arts.
What are the results of Sculptra?
Sculptra can restore your facial structure to treat wrinkles, certain deep scars, and other features that develop as your skin loses its natural collagen and subdermal fat. Using Sculptra fillers, the board-certified dermatologists at Dermatology Arts can:
- Restore fullness to your cheeks
- Fill in nasolabial folds and other larger wrinkles on the lower face
- Fill in the hollows under your eyes
- Lift the brow
- Contour the chin and jaw
During your consultation, you discuss your specific goals with the Dermatology Arts team. They then plan your treatment and decide where to place the injections to give you a natural yet noticeable result.
What should I expect after Sculptra?
Following your treatment with Sculptra, you probably won’t see immediate results. You’ll see the effects increase after each treatment session.
You might experience some swelling in the first 48-72 hours after treatment. The swelling is harmless and will go away on its own, and so will any bruising around the injection site. To be sure you don’t experience other side effects or adverse results, you should:
- Avoid facials on the same day as Sculptra
- Avoid massages on the same day as Sculptra
- Use an ice pack to relieve some swelling
- Gently massage the areas for five minutes, five times per day, for five days
- Use sunscreen religiously to protect your skin from sun damage
You may ask as many questions as you’d like ahead of your appointments so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after each Sculptra treatment.
